Love Affirmations: For Attracting Love and Feeling Loved

Love affirmations for attracting a partner, strengthening a relationship and feeling worthy of love, plus what research says about self-worth and lasting love.

Love affirmations are some of the most searched affirmations in the world, and some of the most misunderstood. Many promise to make a specific person fall for you, or to “attract your soulmate” by next month.

Affirmations can’t control another person’s feelings. What they can do is change how you see yourself in love, and research suggests that matters a lot for the relationships you build and keep.

Why how you see yourself shapes your love life

Feeling worthy affects how you read your partner

In a series of studies, psychologist Sandra Murray and colleagues found that people with low self-esteem tend to underestimate how much their partners love them. That doubt can lead to defensiveness, testing and pulling away, which can strain a relationship.

Compliments don’t always land

People with low self-esteem often brush off compliments from their partners. But in a 2007 study, Denise Marigold, John Holmes and Michael Ross found a simple fix: when people were asked to think about what a compliment meant about them and why their partner admired them, they felt more secure in the relationship, even weeks later.

That’s essentially what a good love affirmation does: it helps you take in the evidence that you’re lovable.

Small positive moments matter

Relationship researcher John Gottman found that stable couples have many more positive interactions than negative ones during conflict, roughly five to one. Affirmations that remind you to notice and offer kindness support that balance.

How to write love affirmations that work

  • Focus on what you control: how you love, what you accept and what you offer.
  • Make them believable. “I’m learning that I deserve kindness” works better than “I am irresistible” if you don’t feel that yet.
  • Use evidence. Think of people who have loved you, and times you showed love well.

A note on “manifesting a specific person”

Many online love affirmations aim at a particular person: an ex, a crush. Affirmations can’t override someone else’s choices, and fixating on one person can keep you stuck. A healthier aim is to manifest the qualities of the relationship you want, and to become someone who recognizes and keeps that kind of love.

If you’re in a relationship where you feel afraid, controlled or hurt, affirmations aren’t enough. Please reach out to a trusted person or a domestic abuse helpline in your country.
